Vannevar Bush
TBD
(Draft)
He started his research during WWI by doing work on
submarine detection. Later on while a professor at
MIT he
designed the differential analyzer, an analog calculator
that could solve differential equations with up to 18
variables.
During the 1930s Germany had put a lot of effort in
producing scientists and engineers-- in some cases the
research funded by American foundations. It was felt that
only a high level coordinating effort could possibly bring
results.
The man chosen for the job of coordinating the war
research effort was Vannevar Bush. Bush had experience both
as a scientist/engineer and as an administrator.
In 1938 he bacame president of the Carnegie Institute
of Washington, an organization that supported research on a
wide variety of areas. Bush became the Director of the
"Office of Scientific Research and Development in 1941"
Under Bush, OCRD supported and coordinated hundreds of
scientific programs throughout the US. The two most famous
research projects however were: the design of the computer
and the development of the atomic bomb. Both of these
projects as well as his later work are as we shall see
related to the development of Internet.
