BIOS
  • The manual for confucius is in the case

  • SATA needs to be shut off because it causes the drives to get renumbered in a way that loses hda

  • I can't seem to get Linux working with the Highpoint 372 RAID chip

Mail

  • Use postfix. Sendmail stinks

  • The default postfix configuration will reject mail if the mailbox is too large.

  • Mandrake will automatically add a soft bounce to the main.cf configuration file. Once you've tweaked the file and it is working, you need to remove the line that enforces soft bounces. If you don't what will happen is that the spam relays will attempt unsuccessfully to deliver mail, and this will bog down the system.

  • postfix breaks if you add ldap to nsswitch.conf

Database

  • you need to initdb as locale C otherwise it won't use index in substring matches. This is a problem with the Mandrake RPM and a bug report has been submitted.

  • You need to drop the tables courseout and programsout before you recreate them. For some reason, vacuum does not reclaim disk space if you do a delete on them which leads to some serious performance degradation over time.
